Ocelot's Alternate Character Generation System for Cyberpunk 2020

MODIFIED R. TALSORIAN CYBERPUNK

Version 3.3, last updated 7.17.02. A spanish translation can be found here.

by Gary Astleford

SUMMARY

The following information details an alternate character creation process designed for use with Cyberpunk 2020. It incorporates new rules for buying skills, creating older characters, an advantage and disadvantage system, and a new way to figure out starting funds. Character roles are not used. This will allow responsible players more flexibility with character creation.

Any part of this system can be adapted for GMs and players who wish to keep using the regular CP2020 system roles. The elimination of roles is not an essential part of this system, although it is an important step, and the rest of this variation will assume that they are not in use. Feel free to use whichever parts you feel comfortable with.

This edition (version 3.3) has been updated slightly. This is reflected in a more standardized cost system for advantages and disadvantages, as well as several new advads and disads. Many of the old advantages and disadvantages have been reworked and/or clarified. Some of the lifepath details have been altered slightly, and I’ve made a few additions. Overall, things work just like they used to. There’s just a little bit more to work with. Continue reading “Ocelot's Alternate Character Generation System for Cyberpunk 2020”

Redefining the Media Role in Cyberpunk 2020

While fiddling with the finetuning of the new cyberpunk2020.de page, I was wondering how blogging and other new ways to publish stuff would affect playing a Cyberpunk Media today.

Media was never a really popular choice in our games, because you were dependend on an publisher. You needed the space in a screamsheet or some time on the telly to tell your truth to the public . But it was usually rather hard to pass some dirty truth past the eyes of an editor-in-chief, especially if you wanted to go life nationwide.

But now there is blogging. During the G8-Summit german bloggers showed that they could transport news faster then classic media and correct errors the big networks made. This replaces newspapers. Podcasting replaces the radio. Now Indiskretion Ehrensache (a german blog) showed us that you can even do your own television show on the internet, without big money or an editor behind you.

So the Media has three ways to bring his message across: Continue reading “Redefining the Media Role in Cyberpunk 2020”

Bugs – New Programming Options for Cyberpunk 2020

Bugs – New Programming Options

Author: Mockery.

Bugs are programming “options” which reduce the difficulty of a program by incorporating features which are … shall we say, less than advantageous. You can attribute bugs to poor programming, beta test versions, cracked or corrupt copies, and so forth and so on. The source of the bug doesn’t usually matter, but the effects should at least be inconvenient, and at most deadly.

You’ll notice that many of the values given for these bugs are just the opposite of a positive option. Obviously, costs can be modified to suit. A bug which is the exact opposite of an option will cancel the option — you can’t have Slow and Speed in the same program and expect either one to work, or to give you any change in the program’s total difficulty. TRINITY – A Cyberpunk 2020 Church and Corporation

TRINITY

Author: Gary Astleford

“What’s Trinity? Combine the worst of all the evil televangelist ministries on the planet (estimated net worth on the order of billions), throw in a dash of cutthroat corporate ethics (extraction teams who work for the Lord), mix in Valley Bible Death Camps and razorwire towers, a cruciform data fortress staffed by pro-level born-again netrunners, and you’re starting to hear the word of Jesus Christ. Can you say Amen, brother?”
— Jody Morris, aka Virtue

GM’s NOTES

Trinity originally started out as an enemy in an old campaign I ran based on Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime. After that, it became a very vague, yet compelling, presence in my Cyberpunk universe. I’d dismissed it for several years, not thinking anything more of it until the Coke Madness game, which happened sometime in mid-1994.

Most of my ideas for Trinity came from events in the news, including Jim Baker and the PTL. Lots of evangelical types added to my brainstorming. I mean, here you’ve got this completely screwed up society. Modern (ie, 90’s) Christians are thinking that it’s so bad now, the Rapture is coming any day. So what do these people do when things get worse? They can either turn away from faith, or they can grab onto it tighter, like a drowning man on one of those floating hot dogs. Tokyo Streetnight Game – A Cyberpunk 2020 Adventure

IDEAS AND CONCEPTS FOR THE TOKYO STREETNIGHT GAME

a scenario (and extra) for Cyberpunk 2020 by Kristian de Valle (kdevalle@netlink.com.au)

[In the words of the author, “raw notes and the shambling semblance of a semi-long scenario.” Unpolished and straight from the factory, it is presented here in the hopes it may spark some ideas in fellow GM’s. At the bottom is A MacGuffin Called Agrippa, something more in tune with what you might consider a traditional scenario.]
Start simple. An event to kick everything off. A massive rave. Gotta bone up on my drugs. New Years Eve, 2022. The warehouse rave to beat all warehouse raves. Lights, lasers, neon, smoke, nitrous oxide, recreational drugs, scantily clad lads and ladies, smart drinks and killer drinks and love potions.
So what happens at the Rave? Who dies? Who lives? Who gets drugs planted on them? Who gets influenced by drugs? Have to check the motivations and climate of the underground Tokyo scene. Continue reading “Tokyo Streetnight Game – A Cyberpunk 2020 Adventure”

The Mafia Job Starter Kit – A Cyberpunk 2020 Campain

The Mafia Job Starter Kit

Author: Kristian de Valle (kris@cxa.com.au)

Situation: The Italian Mafia is looking at expanding their operations across to the City Center and the North, and down through the Arts District and the University. They seek to re-establish the old stranglehold that the Italian families held on much of N.C. They hire the characters on as a specialized ‘strike team’. This is deliberately ambiguous as the mob will use the edgers as anonymous hitters and errand boys and everything in between.

Much of the expansion will be light at first, such as protection rackets, drug dealings, black market gear of all sorts. Recruiting both manpower and prostitutes; they will also be into pimping and meat puppet rackets. They already have their fingers in a number of small Corp pies and have OS interests. They have a lot of goods tied up at the docks and marina warehouses. This ranges from luxury items to black market gear.

Gangs will be a problem; such as the Bozos, and especially the Voodoo boys, who will employ the black arts and ugly drugs to fuck around with anyone who threatens their turf. The Uni will be a no-go zone, and this will make it especially hard to catch any of the V-boys. Continue reading “The Mafia Job Starter Kit – A Cyberpunk 2020 Campain”
