The Street finds its own uses for things…
The Street finds its own uses for things – uses the manufacturers never imagined.
- William Gibson, Rocket Radio
I had to remember this bonmont from the feather of the Grandmaster of Cyberpunk, William Gibson (if you don’t know the Rocket Radio Story, which has – to my knowledge – only been published in the Rolling Stone Magazine (June 15th, 1989), its available online) when I saw this photos by the German photographer Thomas Kalak:

A simple plastic bag and a straw= its a bottle.

There’s a lightbulb in the bottle. The plastic wrapping will make it glow red in darkness.

It would be trash for you, but to them its a solution.

Someone created a mop from old socks.

And I wondered where all those AOL Disks went. They now do something useful in Thailand. For the first time…
So why do I bother you with these pics? You probably never lived in a slum. Cyberpunk characters do. Usually. Its called combat zone, no-police area or sprawl. William Gibson was fascinated by these reuses of tech. You should, too. That’s why. Plus its terribly interesting. (via)
